COLLECTION OF SWANS EGGS
RECORD TOTAL FROM LAKE ELLESMERE
A total ef 28741 dozen black swans' eggs were collected on Lake Ellesmere this season. This was certainly t a record, said Ml J. MscKpnzie, chairman of the game committee, at a meeting of toe council of the North Can. tefpury Acclimatisation Society last evening. The sale of the eggs resulted in a profit of £1424. Mr MacKenzie said that if toe eggs were collected, as in toe past, OP limited parts of the lake, the effect would be beneficial. There could be too many swans op the lake, and in the past the society had had complaints of swans starving. Hie council’s policy during the last two years had increased the number of young swans. It was decided that there should be a more extensive collection of eggs next season, to conserve food supplies on the lake.
