Gay Ballerina had a well-deServed win m the First Hauraki Plains Handicap at the Thames xneeting on Saturday. She had been placed at four of her previous five appearances and on Saturday she was the odds-on favourite. She followed Wattie Lawn into the straight and won with ridiculous ease from Zulu Boy, which should win sooij. Wattie Lawn tired m the straight and he was a fair third ahead of True Parrish. Gay Ballerina, which is now trained at Pokeno by E. R. Smith, has had iz starts .his season for two wins and six placings. She is a grand type of five-year-old mare by Indianapolis from Gay Aggie, by Great Bingen from Pavlova, bv Man o’ War from the imported Irish-bred mare, Our Aggie. Gay Ballerina is a full-sister to a winner in Red Shade. Our Aggie, which was imported by J, Bryce, left katana, My Sonny, Grandlight, Red Shadow (a New Zealand Cup winner,and sire of a number of useful performers, including Gough’s Pride) and Irish Aggie (the dam of Lucky Irish). Gay Ballerina has been given plenty of time to mature, and she is expected to go to a tight mark.

Shalimar is the latest addition to J. Howell- The Josedale Grattan gelding has not won since he beat gantree and Despatch in the Burwood Handicap at New Brighton on February 19, 1949. He showed considerable promise in nis four-year-old season and, as well as his success at New Brighton, he won at two of his other appearances. Since then he has been a disappointment, but he has shown speed in some of his races. His dam. Wee Potts, was a good winner, taking a mile and a quarter record of 2min 40sec. Easy Win Ivy’s Pi de scored a most convincing win in the Second Hauraki Plains Handicap at the Thames meeting on Saturday. He put a break of four lengths on the field on the turn into the straight and from then he was never challenged. A six-year-old Bill B. gelding, he is trained at Te Awamutu by R. D. Kennerley, who has nine horses in work. He is a brother to E. N. Kennerley, who recently moved to Sydney. R. D. Kennerley trained in Canterbury, but he had only moderate success. Au Revoir was having his first start in a race when he finished second to Neon Ring in the second division of the First April Handicap at-Thames on Saturday. He was formerly trained by his Christchurch owner, Mr C. L. Rhodes, and he seems to have a bright future. He was well handled by his Te Rapa trainer, M. Stewart, and he should be hard to beat in the Kairanga Handicap at the Manawatu meeting this week. He is a three-vear-old gelding by Springfield Globe from Kind Wish, by Grattan Loyal. He was bred by Mr J. X. Ferguson. Akaroa, and purchased for 325gns by Mr Rhodes at the annual yearling sales.

Novice Winner Cherry Malotte, which had been placed at her three previous appearances this season, came into her own In the first division of the First April Handicap at Thames on Saturday. Formerly trained at Prebbleton by C. C. Devine, he was purchased several months ago by the Hamilton trainer, C. Moran, who has had great success with horses he has bought in Canterbury. Cherry Ma’otte is a five-vear-old mare by Springfield Globe from Bingen’s Advice, by Great Bingen from Free Advice, tracing back to Thelma, founder of one of the best winning families in the Stud Book.
