WIN IN OPEN COMPANY

BILLY MAC’S SUCCESS AT INVERCARGILL

Billy Mac scored his first success in open company when he won the Awarua Handicap on the first day of the Southland Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. In a slow-run race he did not drift as far out of his ground as usual, and although he was last into the straight he was soon within striking distance of the leaders. Inside the last half furlong he had the situation in hand.

Billy Mac has had several changes of stables since he first appeared as a two-year-old, and with only average luck in some of his races, he would nave made further progress. He is a six-year-old Man’s Pal gelding and a half-brother to Stanfred. Their dam, Blissful Lady, is a Paper Money mare from Lady Blissful, and a sister to the dual Winter Cup winner, Bashful Lady Lady Blissful was out of the imported mare Lady Wayward 11, which founded a great family of winners including The Joker, Lord Nuffield. Tenor Royal, Pride, Jaloux, Capricious Merry Robin and others. Salma Royal, which finished second, ran her usual solid race. She looked a winner until Billy Mac appeared on the icene.

Formation did not appreciate the slow pace early, and he did not have a chance to show his stamina. Baygundi came home solidly, but failed by a head to beat Formation for third. Mount Barker, which was a close fifth, had a good run throughout and looked a winner when she took charge with a fur10n® mn, but she did not stay on. Super Flight was always well placed and secured a good run through on the inner at the home turn. Her weight of 9-6 proved too much over the concluding stages.

Uist was left in front at the end of two furlongs, and W. F. Ellis had to make the most of this role. She failed, however, to see out the journey. Well-bred Winners

Full Tone and Black Briar, the two novice winners at the Southland meeting, have breeding to recommend them. Full Tone, a Siegfried four-year-old, is the sixth winner-left by his dam, Full Fling, whose earlier winners were Wild £S re u e . r ’,.J' a L r Trla1 ' Ful > Pky. S« c ret F 1^ ht (the dam of High Quest), and Wild Full Tone was in front throughout on Saturday, and won with a good deal in hand. He would have won his way out of novice ranks before this with only average luck.

Black Friar,. for which a four-figure offer was refused last week, made no race of his novice division. He is a three-year-old Bobin Goodfellow gelding from Sally Lunn, a Salmagundi mare which won the Oamaru Cup, ths C.J.C. Sockburn Handicap, and the Wellington Champion Hack Cup. Sally Lunn is a half-sister to Filibeg (winne- of 10 races), Madam Cherry (the dam of Merry Lancer), Peony Rose (winner of the Otautau and Wyndham Cups, rnd dam of Defendant), and of Lady Paigle, dam of Delayed and Deploy Black Briar looks like gaining further honours for this family.
