WEDNESDAY (Before Mr R. M. Grant, S.M.) CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER Kathleen Virginia Hogg, a housewife, aged 25, of Waikari (Mr E. M. Hay), was remanded to appear on April 19 on a charge of attempting to murder Lawrence Edward Hogg, at Waikari, on April 10. Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty appeared for the police. FINED FOR DRUNKENNESS George Edgar Pengelly, a labourer, aged 53, was fined £2, in default four days’ imprisonment, on a charge of drunkenness. , UNLICENSED RADIO William Young Dennett was fined £1 10s for operating an unlicensed radio. SULPHUR DIOXIDE IN BEEF Gerald Thomas Gibson, a butcher, of 917 Colombo street, was fined £2 10s for selling beef to which sulphur dioxide had been rdded. .Mr A. W. Brown, who appeared for the Medical Officer of Health, said the amount of preservative which had been added was 13 grams a pound. NO RETURN OF INCOME Noel Bernard Rennell, a builder (Mr P. H. T. Alpers), was fined £5 on a charge of failing to furnish a return of income derived during the year ended March 31, 1947. On further charges relating to the next three years, he was fined £5. £4, and £2 respectively. Rennell pleaded guilty to all the charges. Mr A. W. Brown, who appeared for the Commissioner of Taxes, said there was no suggestion of any attempt by the defendant to avoid taxation, and the case was simply one of continued neglect. The Magistrate said that as the defendant was in business, his case was rather different from that of a salaried person. CREAM WRONGLY LABELLED Grofski’s Dairy, Ltd., 264 Brougham street, was fined £5 for selling cream which was not properly labelled. The company pleaded not guilty to the charge. For the Medical Officer of Health, Mr A. W. Brown said a sample bottle of cream, labelled "pure cream,” had been bought from the dairy on February 1. When it was analysed, the cream was found to have been pasteurised. (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) FAILED TO SURRENDER LICENCE Martin Ludwig, an engineer, of Belfast, was convicted and ordered to pay the costs of the proceedings on a charge of failing to surrender to the Electrical Wiremen's Registration Board at Wellington his certificate of registration as an electrical Wireman. Mr A. W. Brown, who appeared for the registrar of electrical wiremen, said the defendant appeared to be a very stubborn man, and had indicated that he would surrender his certificate rather than pay the department's fee of 10s. The certificate had been surrendered.

South bland Friesian Championships. —The New Zealand Friesian Association has allocated its South Island championship lor 1951 to the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for competition at the Metropolitan Show in November.
