WOMEN OFFER TO DRIVE TRUCKS
REMOVAL OF FOOD SUPPLIES
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 3. Taking the attitude that if the men will not deliver the goods they will, a group of Wellington women, all housewives and experienced drivers, have offered their services to the Mayor of Wellington to man vehicles and remove vital foodstuffs from the wharves.
Announcing the offer, the Mayor (Mr R. L. McAlister)’ said that a group of women had indicated that their services would be available at short notice if required. "I can only hope that the manhood of this city will not make it necessary for this offer to be accepted,’’ he said. Mr Mac Alister. who is chairman of the Emergencv Supplies Committee, said that further discussions on the food supply position in the city had
been held at a meeting comprising people interested in handling cargo and removing foodstuffs and the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan). The Mayer said that servicemen on Monday, would unload tea from the Wairimu. It was confirmed to-dav that some bakers hajj to reduce output yesterday because of the flour shortage, and if it had not been for the action of the servicemen in unloading flour during the week, Wellington would have gone without bread during the week-end.
