SYDNEY FERRIES MAY CLOSE DOWN
SYDNEY. February 21 Sydney's ferries are likely to close down their passenger services on March 31 or Aoril 30. The directors of Sydney Ferries. Ltd., announce that because of losses they will recommend to shareholders at a special meeting on March 9 that the ferries be closed, and it will be for the meeting to decide the date. chairman of directors (Colonel A. Spain) told the Transport Director (T7r R. Winsor) that the ferries carried 21 000 persons each day. but needed another 8000 pswqngers to operate at a profit. The onlv solution was for the Government to buy the service at a ’’rice. Mr Winsor said the decision was a bcmh’bell and that neither the Government nor private operators could take over at such short notice.
