QUEENSLAND BUSH FIRES
BRISBANE, February 21
More than 100 fire-fighters worked throughout the night to save the town of Barcaldine (population 2500) in central western Queensland from bush fires. ,
Fire-breaks have been cut and burned round the town and bulldozers are clearing away inflammable material. The huge fire, which has already destroyed sheep valued at £16,000 on five stations, has almost encircled the town which is under a rain of ash. One grazier has lost 1500 sheep and 22,000 acres of good grass.
Cyril Maude Dead.—Mr Cyril Maude, a famous British actor-manager, died to-day at his home in Torquay. He was 88 and had had a severe attack of influenza. Mr Maude's name was legendary, both in England and America, for his polished acting and promotion of theatrical ventures.— London, Feb. 20.
