ANNUAL SALE OF YEARLINGS
MANY WELL-BRED YOUNGSTERS
Most of the 118 yearlings to be offered by Messrs H. Matson and Company and Wright, Stephenson and Company, at the seventh annual national sale of trotting and pacingbred yearlings, which will be neld at the Addington showgrounds on Friday, February 16, are by American-bred sires.
The Roydon Lodge sire, Light Brigade, and the Oamaru sire, Sandydale, have 10 youngsters to represent them, and New Zealand’s leading sire, Dillon Hall, and Grattan Loyal, each have nine. They are followed by the imported Josedale Grattan, a New Zealand Cup and free-for-all winner, with eight; Radihnt Wa!la and U. Scott, seven; Direct Heir, six; Gold Bar and Gold Chief, five; Andy Derby, four; Pacing Power, Quite Sure and Wayfarer, three; and Bonny Bridge, Lucky Jack, Red Emperor, Sir Michael and Young Bob, two. Among this year’s entries is a colt by Light Brigade from a good performer in Navy Blue. Last year a full-brother was purchased for 650 guineas by Sir Jtohn McKenzie. He was seen in action at a two-year-old parade at Addington early in the month when he showed plenty of ability, al though he ran greenly. Another youngster likely to be widely sought is a colt by Dillon Hall from Sunny Corner. A full-brother topped the list in 1949 when he realised 750 guineas A full-sister was sold in 1948 for 410 guineas. Another youngster, which is expected to bring a high price, is a by Dillon Hall from a good winner in Ochiltree, which was a sister to Wrackler, the greatest double-gaited horse to race in New Zealand. She is a member of one of the greatest winning families in the Stud Book, being from the imported mare, Trix Pointer. Other interesting entries include a haif-sister by Gold Bar to Attack, a half-brother by the Globe Derby horse, Admiral Harewood, to Young Charles, and a half-brother by Sandydale to the Auckland Trotting Cup winner, Victory Globe. A youngster bred to go a long way as a trotter is a filly by Josedale Dictator, the sire of Dictation and others, from a Dominion Handicap winner in Sea Gift.
Great interest will be the first of the progeny of Highland Fling to be offered for auction. He will be represented by a colt from Spring Fashion, winner of the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes and other races.
This year brood mares and racing stock will be sold separately, and on Tuesday. February 20, 47 lots will be offered at the showgrounds. It is expected that this year’s sale will be one of the most successful on record, as a large number of Australian visitors to the Inter-Dominion Championships are expected to attend. Additional Entry I The Australian trotter. Father’s Wish, was omitted from the list of nominations for the Dunedin Handicap on the fourth day of the Inter-Dominion Championship meeting at Addington on February 24. Disqualified The horse, Duralium. his owners. P. J. and T. E. Flannery, and his trainer, W. Picken, were disqualified on January 3 for six months by the New South Wales Trotting Club stewards. Starting at 7 to 4 on, Duralium won the qualifying stakes at Harold Park. The disqualifications were imposed under Rule 98, which deals with inconsistent and unsatisfactory running. The connexions of the horse said they would appeal against the disqualification Having his first start under lights the previous Saturday, Duralium had led until near the home turn, and was beaten into third place. . The stewards also opened an inquiry into the performance of\Real Man. which started at 7 to 4, and won the Wellington Handicap.
Ashburton Matinee Meeting Entries for the matinee meeting to be heid on January 20 at Ashburton close on Monday, 15th instant, at 5 p.m. Advt. Inter-Dominion Championship . Withdrawals for both the pacing and trotting championships, to be run at the Inter-Dominion championship meeting on February 10, 15, 17, and 24, must be re.eived by 5 p.m. on Friday. Advt.
