SEAMAN TO PAY £20
PLATE GLASS WINDOW BROKEN
An affray between two seamen in Norwich quay, Lyttelton, last evening. during which a large plate glass window in an office was broken, resulted in one of the men being charged at a special sitting of the Magistrates Court in Lyttelton. Accused was Michael Williams, ordinary seaman, aged 21. from the overseas ship Derryclare. He was charged before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., with having assaulted Farquhar Stoddart. and also with wilfully breaking a plate glass window valued at £46. the property 6f Frederick Harold Knights. Williams pleaded not guilty. Stoddart said in evidence that while walking with two companions in Norwich auav he was accosted by Williams and assaulted. In the struggle both fell through the window. Williams, in evidence, said he had approached Stoddart and asked him to shake hands. When Stoddart refused a struggle started but no blows were struck.
Senior Sergeant F. Hayhurst said that all the men had been drinking. On the charge of breaking the window Williams was ordered to pay £2O towards the cost and on the assault charge he was convicted and discharged.
