AIDING DEFENCE OF EUROPE
U.S. ARTICLE REMINDS FRANCE, GERMANY BERLIN, November 5. An article in the official United States newspaper in Berlin. “Die Neue Zeitung,” to-aay warns France and Germany that prompt action by them is required if they wish to continue enjoying United States help in the defence of Europe. The article, which was clearly inspired by the State Department in Washington, was provoked on the one hand by the French Government’s delaying policy, and on the other by the German Social Democratic Party’s tactics which (the article says) are damaging the stability and security of the German Federal Republic. The article says that while the United States is ready to establish a common European-American defence force, the extent of the American contribution depends essentially on the contribution of other European countries.
It adds that the United States has no .intention whatever of re-creating German military strength, but it is convinced that a prerequisite for an effective and common European-Ameri* can defence force is that all shall take part on a common basis. The United States cannot believe that the German people wish to be defended by other people without themselves taking part.
