ESTIMATE OF OUTPUT QUESTIONED

It was expected that the Kinleith paper mills, near Tokoroa, would be in operation by 1952 and that timber products from it would be available before then, said Mr D. Henry, chairman of directors of New Zealand Forest Products. Ltd., to the Bay of Plenty Harbour Committee of Inquiry, which concluded its hearing at Rotorua yesterday afternoon. The witness sait that.he doubted whether Murupara production would reach the estimated figure, as much of the Kaingaroa Forest was planted in slow-grow-ing pines, and it would be criminal, he said, to cut these before ready. Judge Archer, who presided, asked the witness if he could supply information on the overseas market. “It is an exceedingly difficult subject,” replied the witness. “The newsprint situation is subject to considerable change.” He thought Canada’s output would go to the United States and England. Sweden was over-com-mitted and less output from there could be expected. The witness considered that the question would not depend entirely on price. Other circumstances must compel New Zealand to do something definite on newsprint production. He thought that Australia and Japan would be New Zealand’s main markets for pulp, but that other markets could be found.
