TROTTING DOMINION HANDICAP TO-DAY

Dictation And Ripcord To Meet

ADORIAN MAY WIN DERBY , STAKES

Although the Dominion Trotting Handicap has drawn a field of only 11, it should result in one of the most interesting races on the second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Cup meeting at Addington to-day. After Dictation’s impressive win in the Sockburn Sprint on Tuesday he is certain to be a warm favourite. The son of Josedale Dictator and Seal Globe has never looked better, and if he can make his rules out in front he should set the remainder of the field a difficult task.

Dictation has sometimes been a little wayward at the barrier, and if he makes any mistakes Ripcord’s prospects would be enhanced. Ripcord has had two wins and two placings in his four starts this season, and he is one of the brightest prospects among the younger trotters. He is bred to go a.lpng way, and his record as a stayer is a good one. Of the remainder of the field the bracket of Single Task and Acclamation is selected. Acclamation is set a difficult task from 60 yards, but on her day there are few better trotters in the country. She generally takes some time to warm up and if she is allowed to get handy to the leaders over the first mile and a half she should go close to winning her second Dominion Handicap.. Single Task is another grand trotter and she, too, should be close up* at the post. The 14 horses in the New Zealand Derby Stakes *should provide a r * c ®’ chances of Adorian, Johnny Globe and Vivanti are most highly rated, but Irish Orator, First Victory, Flagship and Prince Charming have plenty of ability and they could upset calculations.

Adorian impressed critics with his easy win in the Riccarton Stakes, and he is expected to be the hardest to beat in the Derby. He looks as though the extra two furlongs in today’s race should not worry him. He is a neatly-made colt by Springfield Globe from Coquette, and he should eventually take a tight mark for his owner-trainer, F. G. Holmes.

Johnny Globe is a solid colt by Logan Derby from Sandfast, and he has raced consistently throughout his career. He has seldom run a bad race, and he shquld fully extend Adorian.

Vivanti made a miserable showing in the Riccarton Stakes. She looked as well as ever, but possibly needed the race to bring her to her peak. Her form last season was outstanding, and this class filly should not be long making ameffds for Tuesday’s effort. If Flagship, Prince Charming, or First Victory begin smartly they should take part in the finish. Their waywardness, however, does not make them a good proposition, but they could surprise.

The New Zealand Free-for-All was robbed of considerable interest when the Dillon Hall stallion, Chamfer, was withdrawn from the race. The other place-getters in the Trotting Cup, Plunder Bar, Single Direct, Lady Averill, Attack, and Gantree are all engaged, and they should add interest to what promises to be a grand race.

As a result of his performances last year. Single Direct is certain to be one of the favourites. His 4min 14seo, recorded when he finished third in the Cup, was a splendid effort and showed that he is at his best. If E. N. Kennerley can get him out of the barrier smartly he should be a possibility. Parawa Derby a young horse with a fine record, is also expected to race well, and Captain Sandy’s class should bring him close up at the fin*With sprinters of the calibre of Gay Knight, Dragoman, and Nebula engaged there is plenty of room for surprise, but Single Direct should be the hardest to beat, with Parawa .Derby and Captain Sandy likely to r rath a place. . The Minor Events Victory Song will strip in great' order for her engagement in the Hayward Handicap, the first leg of to-day’s double. She scored a hollow victory in the Final Handicap on Tuesday, and she should appreciate the longer journey to-day. The Light Brigade mare generally races well When fresh, and at the start of last season she won her first four races. Victory Song looks improved by her races at the recent Wellington meeting, and if she fails to make a bold showing it will not be on the score of condition. Scotch Drift and Yankiwi have the best credentials of the others, and they should reach a place. Walnut Hall was a costly failure in the Introductory Handicap on Tuesday. He should be improved by the race and may make amends to-day. Aqua Lady and Hall Ace should do better in the shorter distance to-day. Both are capable pacers, and it will not surprise if they race well. Kublai Khan is capable of a Surprise, and the consistent Marco Polo gelding mayrace well. The Hornby Handicap, the second leg of the double, is one of the most-open races on the card. ,Young Charles hK confidently expected to make amends for his defeat on the first day of the meeting, but he will have to be on his best behaviour to hold off horses with such good form as Blue Mist, Good Review, Fortuna, Systematic, Awadale, Culture, and Zulu. The field in the Author Dillon Handicap presents a problem. Not many of the runners have form to recommend them, but Te Arawhata, a good stayer, Gay Note and Josedale Audubon should race well. Horses handy in the early stages of the Flying Mile Handicap should have an advantage over the final furlong. Fortuna, County Antrim and Beckleigh usually begin smartly, and they are a trio likely to take part in the finish. . Highland Kilt and Two Step are expected to monopolise the betting in the Yaldhurst Handicap, and they should have a keen duel. Highland Kilt looked as though he might have been a little unlucky to be beaten by Gay Belwin on Tuesday. He is a foolproof trotter, and he is expected *to make amends to-day. -■ Itiluan Mac and Swanee River are two useful trotters, and they will be place prospects. Their chances of beating Highland Kilt or Two Step do not look bright. The following horses will be bracketed on the totalizator:— Yaldhurst Handicap: Endowed and Belshazzar.
