LABOUR VICTORY IN COMMONS
TWO CENSURE VOTES DEFEATED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, November 7. The British Labour Government tonight beat off two Opposition attempts to unseat it. By 10 votes it defeated a motion by the Conservatives depleting further nationalisation, and the Labour plans to make some economic controls permanent, and by 15 votes it beat a Liberal motion censuring the Government for failing to keep down the cost of living. All parties rounded up invalids for the voting. • One member came in a wheelchair and another had his head swathed in bandages. In the cost of living debate the voting came an hour earlier than expected. and caught the Opposition unawares. They registered only 284 votes against the Government’s 299. In the vote on controls the Opposition mustered 289 votes and the Government again registered 299.
