DISPARITY IN WAGES
PROFESSIONAL MEN AND TRADESMEN
(Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY. Nov. 8. Hearing the application of scientific and Chemical workers for an award today, Mr Justice de Baun commented that practically all professional and semi-professional workers were very badly off when their salaries were compared with the wages Tered tradesmen. The witness, who was a research chemist employed by a large paint firm, said he was paid £l3 a week, whereas daily newspaper advertisements offered bricklayers £l5 and builders’ labourers £l2 a week. To-day's newspapers contain an account, of the rush which ensued when a chain store advertised for a woman to demonstrate a vegetable peeler at a wage of £l4 a week.
