WORLD PEACE CONGRESS
MANY EMPTTY SEATS EXPECTED (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, November 8. There will be many empty seats when the Communist-backed World Peace Congress opens in Sheffield next week. Sixty-five Russian delegates were expected, but a large portion of them will be missing, says the “Daily Mail.” The Foreign Office, on instructions from the Home Office, is “getting tough” with applicants for visas, the newspaper say:'.. Known troublemakers will not be admitted. At least 15 Czechs have been barred. Sixteen received permission to enter England and 23 are awaiting a decision. Seven of Finland’s 25 delegates have been refused visas. Twelve Argentine delegates have also been barred. In the House of Lords last night the Lord Chancellor (Viscount Jowitt) said that there was no power to prohibit the Congress as long as it conducted itself and did not infringe the law. The Prime Minister (Mr Attlee) has described the Congress as “bogus.”,
