SIZE OF GERMAN TROOP UNITS
FRENCH LOOKING FOR COMPROMISE
(Rec. 9 pm.) LONDON, Nov. 8. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that the French Prime Minister (Mr Pleven) is making a determined effort to find a compromise between the conflicting French and American views on Western Germany’s contribution to the European defence forces.
French officials were fairly optimistic last night that a compromise would be reached. . I
The most difficult question is the size of the German units. The French demand battalion or regiment-sized German units, whereas the Americans and others believe a division to be the smallest efficient unit in modem warfare.
When the French National Assembly approved the European Army plan it specifically endorsed the Government’s determination not to allow the recreation of a German Army or German General Staff, and both London and Washington are in full agreement with Paris on this. The Assembly’s resolution made no mention of the size of the German emits. * At present the French are inclined tb consider the minimum German formation as something between a regiment and a division, and it is along these lines that Mr Pleven is believed to be working.
