LIGHT PLANE CRASHES
ENGINE FAILURE AT 2000 FEET
PILOT AND PASSENGER INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) WHAKAHANE. November 8. A Gipsy Moth aeroplane crashed at 'Pekatahi, near Taneatua. this afternoon, and the pilot and one of the two passengers were injured and admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital. They ar* Stanley J. Blackmore, of Rotorua. the pilot, who received concussion and lacerations, and Miss Jessie Cockburn, of Taupo, who received scalp wounds. The other passenger, Mr Lindsay Cotton, of Dann*virke, was not injured. Th* aeroplane, which was owned by Messrs Blackmore Brothers, of Rotorua. was flying from Opotiki to Rotorua when the engine failed at 2000 feet The pilot attempted to land, but the plane struck a tree and was completely wrecked.
MAN STRUCK BY FALLING BRANCH
SERIOUS INJURIES TO HEAD SUFFERED
(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON; November 8. When he was struck by a falling branch, Mr Albert Griffith aged 65. of Wakefield, suffered injuries to his skull, abrasions to his face, and extreme shock. He was admitted to the Nelaon Public Hospital this afternoon in a very grave condition. With a neighbour, Mr E. P. Higgins, he was sawing up a tree which they had felled, when a heavy limb crashed down from a nearby birch and struck him. It thought that the limb was broken off when 'the first tree fell against it.
JOCKEY INJURED WHEN CAR OVERTURNS
From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, November 8. Brendon Joseph Langford, aged 20. a jockey, of Oamaru. suffered concussion, and was taken to the Timaru Public Hospital when a seddn car, travelling south, went over the eastern embankment at Barker’s railway crossing, Winchester, at 10.45 p.m. on Monday. He was discharged from hospital to-day. Three other jockeys in the car had narrow escapes from serious injury. The driver and owner of the car. James Matthew Cappie. of Invercargill, suffered a minor cut over the eye. and Morrell Hudson Hillis, of Invercargill, and Morris George Murray, were not injured. The car hit a post on the roadside, careered over the embankment, struck a telephone post, and turned over tiyice, to come to rest at right angles against a concrete fence post 77 feet from where it left the roadway. The car was extensively damaged.
CYCLIST INJURED
A cyclist, Mr Charles William Higgins, aged 64, of 124 Kilmore street, suffered a broken leg when he was knocked off his bicycle on the Kilmore street bridge yesterday afternoon. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital at 4.55 p.m.. where his condition, last evening, was reported to be satisfactory.
