CRICKET
COUNTRY WEEK AT HAGLEY PARK
THREE MATCHES BEGUN Three two-day matches were begun yesterday, the first day of the annual country cricket week at Hagley Park. Playing against an Ashburton team, strengthened by the inclusion of P. Z. Harris and M. B. Poore, South Canterbury made 328 for nine wickets declared in good time. The started badly with two wickets down for nine, but there were two good partnerships later. J. Pine and E. McEwen added 89 for the third wicket and McEwen and H. Taylor-Smith 126 for the filth wicket. McEwen, a former High School Old Boys’ player, batted solidly for the only century of the day. Taylor-Smith way aggressive for his 79< scored in 90 minutes, and including 10 fours.
Scoring in the match between Malvern and North Canterbury, a Sub-Association Shield game, was not as fast. The first three batsmen gave Malvern an excellent start, but after the second wicket had fallen at 156, wickets fell fairly regularly. A. F. Wright batted attractively ior 59. Cunningham bowled very steadily for North Canterbury, and took four wickets for 53 runs.
Ellesmere batted first against Suburban. Most of the batsmen were uncomfortable, particularly against D. N. Stokes, and the side was dismissed for 138 runs. Suburban also started badly, but Davidson and Stokes took the score from five for 93 to 179, and at the end of the day the team was in a strong position lor an outright win. Davidson was 68 not out at stumps. The matches will be concluded to-day, and to-morrow two country teams will play Canterbury.' A Brabin Shield trial match will also be played at Hagley Park on Friday. Scores:— SOUTH CANTERBURY v. ASHBURTON SOUTH CANTERBURY First Innings L.
