OPOSSUMS

Sir.—ln desperation I write to ask if any reader of “The Press” can suggest anything that will keep opossums away from rose-beds. These pests are particularly fond of young rose shoots and buds, which they chew completely off the bushes. In former years I kept them at bay by scattering pepper lavishly over the rose bushes and beds, bpt the present price of pepper now prevents my doing this. It may be that there is some non-poison-cus substitute. If so, many country gardeners would be most grateful Jo hear of it. as a single opossum will completely spoil a rose-bed in one night.—Yours; etc.. NO ROSES. November 8, 1950.
