EVICTED FROM HOSTEL

GOVERNMENT ACTION IN PARNELL (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 7. On instructions from the Government authorities, more than 20 “squatters” at the Waipapa Maori Hostel in Parnell have been evicted during the last few days. This action was taken after an order for their Removal had been obtained from the Court and after the residents of the hostel had been given ample warning to vacate the premises. It is the culmination of 12 months' negotiation, largely on Ministerial level, to ensure that the hostel is reserved for country visitors and that the rule which allows guests to stay for only a week at a time is strictly observed. Some of the “squatters” had been occupying rooms at the hostel since June. They were mainly Maoris, who claimed that they could not obtain any other permanent accommodation in Auckland. Most of them came from North Auckland, and arrangements have been made for them to return there or to live temporarily with other Maori families in Auckland.
