AT THE RACES
VISITORS AT RICCARTON Yesterday, when the Canterbury Jockey Club continued its New Zealand Cup meeting at the Riccarton racecourse, the club was again honoured by the presence of their Excellencies the Governor-General. Sir Bernard Freyberg, and Lady Freyberg. The weather early in the day was pleasant, with overcast srfy and only a gentle wind, but later the wind grew stronger and colder and many women longed for the comfort of warm coats that they had left at home. Her Excellency wore a grey coat frock, with smart white revers, a fulllength grey coat, long grey fur stole and grey straw hat with medium brim lightly upturned and trimming of grey ribbon..
Miss Rosemary Eley, Lady Freyberg’s lady-in-waiting, wore a black suit with black patent leather belt, white blouse and white hat trimmed with a black osprey. Mrs D. Endell Wanklyn, wife of the chairman the club’s committee, wore a brown and beige finely checked suit and brown hat with upturned brim finished with a feather at one side.
With the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) were Mrs Holland and Miss Lois Holland. Mrs Holland wore a grey suit with full length coat, white blouse and grey felt hat with grey and white bow in front. Miss Holland wore a pervenche blue suit, white blouse and small white hat. Overseas visitors who took a lively interest in the racing were Professor Gilbert Strachan, of the University of Wales. Cardiff, and Mrs Strachan, who accompanied their host and hostess, Dr. and Mrs L. C. L. Averill. Australian visitors were Mr and Mrs Saunderson, of New South Wales, and among representatives of the North Island were Mr and Mrs Quentin Donald (Wairarapa), Mrs Corbett (Napier), Mr and Mrs Stuart Paterson, who are staying with Mr and Mrs Neil Christie, Fendalton, Miss Ann Williams (Ruatoria). who is the guest of Mrs Derrick Gould, and Mrs A. J. White, of Hawke’s Bay. As is generally the case during Cup week, a strong contingent of southern racing enthusiasts is visiting Christchurch. Amongst them are Mr and Mrs W. D. Palmer (Invercargill), Mr and Mrs W. Swale (Winton), Mr and Mrs F. J. Fay (Dunedin), and Mr and Mrs H. McLeod (Ranfurly), all of whom were present at Riccarton yesterday. Mrs Euan Macfarlane and Mrs Neville le Cren, both of whom returned to Christchurch recently after a trip overseas, were being greeted by many friends, and another recent arrival from England after an absence of many months was Miss Annette Beitham. of Masterton, who accompanied Mr and Mrs M. Bethell.
