SOVIET NUCLEAR PHYSICIST
WORK IN UNITED STATES . , WASHINGTON, Nav. 2. A leading Soviet physicist who had escaped from the Soviet Union was working in the United States, General Carl Spaatz said to-day. General Spaatz would not give the scientist’s name, but he described the man as one of the formost Russian nuclear physicists who had directed a vital programme of nuclear research at a major Soviet university. Other prominent Soviet scientist* had also escaped, he said. General Spaatz made the statements when accepting the chairmanship of the Iron Curtain Refugee Campaign sponsored by the International Rescue Committee. He said that the purpose of the campaign was to assist the 300,000 political refugees who had es. caped from Communist countries tl Western Europe.
