YANKIWI WINS AT HUTT PARK

TAITA HANDICAP TO TIBERIUS *Th« Presjr" Special Service WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. Yankiwi, which finished third in the Spring Handicap on the first day at Hutt Park, put in a great run to beat the pacemaker and first-day winner, Petite Yvonne, in the Empire Handicap on Saturday. The favourite, Soangetaha, and Victory Song were slow, Locknit being the early leader from Yankiwi, Scott Wrack, Petite Yvonne, and Worthy Gaillard. Petite Yvonne took charge to lead into the last round from Locknit, Scott Wrack, and Yankiwi. Vigilant nearly fell at the two furlong post and lost a lot of ground. Petite Yvonne led into the straight, but was soon challenged by Yankiwi, which proved too strong over the last bit. Cultivator was third, just in. front of Worthy Gaillard, Melton. Scotch Drift, Locknit, and Yours Truly. Mundanity damaged a sulky, and Soangetaha broke at the three. Port Nicholson Handicap Staging a good run around the field at the. half-mile in the Port Nicholson Handicap, the Josedale Dictator mare, Eileen Lilian, disputed the lead and held on to stave off a strong challenge from Aerogard. Morano bobbled at the start. Kopara Lass'began best, but Aerogard soon took over from Waroonga and Petty Officer. Entering the last round Petty Officer led Parrish Mills and Blue Print, but the latter two weakened and at the halfmile Petty Officer was joined by Eileen Lillian and Kopara Lass. These three Jed into the straight from Parrish Mills and Morano, coming on the outer, and Aerogard staging a strong run. Eileen Lillian came on to win from Aerogard, with Kopara Lass third by a head from Alcove. Elmdale, Grand Fleet, Morano, Petty Officer, and Trouville were next. Talta Handicap Tiberius, a winner on the first day, easily accounted for the Taita Handicap field. He drew out over the final furlong to score comfortably. Wendy Grattan was pacemaker, iollowed by Tiberius, Cincinnatus, and Lady Joss. Lady Joss came up on the outside of Tiberius with a round to go, followed by Native Royal and Hillsborough. Tiberius shot to the lead at the two furlongs and turned for! home well clear of Hillsborough, Monty Jason, and Lady Joss. Tiberius won easily from Hillsborough, which just nosed Monty Jason and Lady Joss out o£ fourth place, ahead of Spring Fashion and Mountain Tarn. The totalisator handled £91,645 10s, including £BlO2 on the doubles machine, compared with £89,390 on the second day last year, an increase of £2255 10s. For the meeting £181,475 was handled, compared with £170,514 last year, an increase of £10,961.
