FALSE STATEMENT TO CUSTOMS OFFICER
MAN FINED £2O (New Zealand Pnsi Amtiatton) _ AUCKLAND. November 3. The making of a false and mislead ing statement to a customs officer about currency in his possession when about to leave New Zealand was admitted in the Magistrate’s Court to-day by Francis Freeman a company manager, of Wanganui. It was stated that he had declared £lO in New Zealand currency, whereas he had £7B 10s The Magistrate (Mr J H. Luxford: said that as the money had been cunflscated automatically, a flne of £2O would be appropriate. Senior-Detective Finlay said defendant was leaving by sir for Britain and America on April 21. He foid he hid drawn the extra money for his wite and daughter for their use in Australia and had expected hotel expenses in Auckland, but had stayed with friends. He was bustled and omitted to declare the extra money. Defence counsel said defendant was in a substantial way of business. He had got travellers’ checques at the air base.
The Magistrate said few cases of the kina nad come before the Court.
