MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
JURY FAILS TO AGREE AT RETRIAL
FURTHER HEARING ORDERED
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Nov. 3. After a retirement of m< .e than five hours, a jury in the Supreme Court failed to agree at the retrial of Louisa Maria Clerk, aged 63 a widow, who was charged with unlawfully killing Mrs Joan Phyllis Jack on April 3, thereby committing manslaughter. Mr Justice Callan made an order for a new trial, on the application of the Crown.
The hearing began on Wednesday. The Crown alleged that accused had attempted to procure or was a party to attempting to nrocure the abortion of Mrs Jack, that her actions were unlawful. and as Mrs Jack's death had ensued, accused was guilty of manslaughter.
