WASHHOUSE GUTTED AT KAIKOURA
SHOP GARAGE, AND HOME THREATENED
A washhouse in the combined business and residential premises of Mrs E. M. Paton, West End parade, Kalkoura, was gutted by fire on Saturday morning. About 5.45 a.m. several men who were whitebaiting at the mouth of Lyell creek, about 200 yards away, noticed a column of smoke rising behind the premises of Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., and gave the alarm. The Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade soon arrived and brought the fire under control before it had spread to an adjoining storeroom and the main part of the building which housed a tearooms, shop, garage, and residence, all under the one roof. A man who had been apprehended near the fire about *6 a.m. was charged at the Kaikoura Magistrate’s Court, later In the day, with being an idle and disorderly person in that he had Insufficient lawful means of support. Mr H. J. Hayward, J.P., who was on the Bench, remanded him to appear in Christchurch to-day. The owner of the building, Mrs Paton, got up about 5 a.m. when she heard what appeared to be someone prowling, but returned to bed. She was again up when the alarm was given. The building and stock were Covered by insurance. I
