NEWS FOR WOMEN FETE HELD AT RISINGHOLME

ABOUT 4000 ATTEND

About 4000 persons ‘ attended a fete held recently at Risingholme, where the gross takings were £BOO and the net profit £6OO. The record success of the gathering was the reward of the efforts of hundreds of helpers. They were directed by conveners of committees in charge of numerous stalls and entertainment, and co-ord-ination was effected by a committee presided over by Mr J. Sullivan, the fete supervisor. Besides the usual stalls, there were also a pet show, a Punch and Judy show, films screened in the Risingholme hall, a display of antiques, and demonstrations of pot-try-making and woodwork. The Scottish Society’s Pipe Band played during the afternoon.

An innovation was a queen carnival, round which the fete was organised. In August various groups of the Risingholme centre were arranged to support five queens—the craft queen (Mrs Margaret Frankel), the choir queen (Miss Eileen Smith), the drama queen (Miss Jeanne Edgar), the junior queen (Miss Margaret Sarginson), and the combined women's group queen (Mrs Barbara Cave). Activities were held in support of these candidates, and on lhe day of the fete, wearing medieval costumes, they walked in procession through the grounds at Risingholme with the Christchurch Vest High School Band leading the way. A Maypole dance in front of the queen’s dais completed the programme. On Saturday the crowning ceremony was held in the Risingholme hall, where Mrs Frankel was proclaimed queen by a narrow margin from Mrs Cave, with the drama, choir and junior queens following.

Dr. D. E. Hansen, president of the Risingholme Community Centre, congratulated the organisers on the success of the fete and carnival, which had attracted record attendances and resulted in a record financial return. He honed now that plans could be made for the extension of the craft workrooms and of the storage space at the hall, which was already too small for the needs of the centre.
