AUSTRALIAN RACING

MERRY SCOUT WINS GUINEAS

MELBOURNE CUP PROSPECTS

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 15. There was a poor field for the Herbert Power Handicap, in which there were only eight starters. Usually regarded as a guide to the Caulfield Cup on the opening day of the V.A.T.C. meeting, the race to-day did not give much indication. Dashing Beau won in good style, and as he generally runs well at Caulfield he must be considered next Saturday. Peerless Fox one of the early favourites for the Melbourne Cup, dropped out of favour after having been injured recently. Today he finished on well to run second, and now that he appears to be recovering form will come into calculations again for the Melbourne Cup. He has proved his ability over the Cup distance and if he continues to improve he should go well at Flemington. Victory Law', which started favourite for the Herbert Power Handicap, was a disappointment and is likely to lose friends for the Caulfield Cup.

There was an upset in the Caulfield Guineas, the principal event to-day. Merry Scout, which led practically all the way, scored easily from Alister and the favourite, Flying Halo. Merry Scout by Kinderscout from Merry Laughter, is trained by Theo Lewis for Mr W. J. Winterbottom, one of the leading owners in Western Australia. Although he has shown form in small races Merry Scout has generally weakened at the end of six furlongs. To-day he never appeared likely to be caught. Alister, winner of the A.J.C. Derby, fought on well. Although beaten he is likely to be a firm favourite for the Victoria Derby to be run next month. The extra half-mile of the Derby will be in his favour. Although he finished third, Flying Halo never loked a likely winner and he is likely to lose favour for the Derby. « Gr le3'. 1 e3 '. ? oot ?i which has been strongly fancied tor the Caulfield Cup, enhanced his prospects by scoring well in the Toorak Handicap. Always well placed, he came away in the straight to win by n ? a fl y 5, Although the distance of the Cup Is halt a mile further, Grey Bootss finishing effort suggested that he would not be troubled by the extra distance. Saxony and Lepidus, which were at the rear of the field early, finished well and are not likely to lose any Menas Lor the Caulfield Cup. Results:— DEBUTANTE STAKES, Of £l5OO.
