RUGBY CAPTAIN CHANGES CODE
TREVOR ALLAN TO PLAY LEAGUE (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 18. Australia’s Rugby Union captain, Trevor Allan, aged 23, has signed a four-year contract, at £6250, to play Rugby League with the Leigh Club in England. The fee is a record for any Australian. The previous record was £4750 paid to the winger, Bruce Ryan, at the end of last season. Confirming that he had signed the contract, Allan said that the offer was too big to refuse, and added: “I have been most happy in the Rugbv Union but feel that I have repaid the code for what it has done for me.” He will sail for England On November 15. Allan intends to marry before leaving and the voyage will be a honeymoon. Regarded by Australians as the union’s greatest post-war centre and one of the greatest of all time, Allan has had about 20 offers to play League in England. He toured Britain with the Wallabies in 1948. taking over the captaincy when W. McClean was injured, and he also took part in two tours of New Zealand. In spite of his youth he has led Australia in 10 tests — more than any other player. He works as a salesman with a Sydney hardware firm.
