CONCESSIONS TO STUDENTS
FORMER SERVICEMEN AT UNIVERSITY PETITION TO BE SENT TO PARLIAMENT (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 18. A petition which asks that better concessions be extended by the Senate of the University of New Zealand to former servicemen will be presented to the Petitions Committee of the House of Representatives by the Minister in charge of Police (Mr W. H. Fortune) to-morrow. It is supported by the New Zealand Law Society, the executive committee of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, and the Auckland Rehabilitation Committee. “We are asking that greater tolerance be shown by the Senate to ensure that all men are properly rehabilitated in accordance with promises made to them by their country,” said Mr A. P. Postlewaite, president of the Auckland Returned Services’ Association, who will be associated with the presentation. The petition asks that the Senate’s decision not to grant concessions after any former serviceman has been discharged for more than two years be amended. It also asks that for the law degree Latin be disoensed with. The petitioners believe that the Minister of Education should have power to direct the Senate in the interests of the rehabilitation of former servicemen.
