EXPENSIVE’S BIG • DIVIDEND Expensive made a quick return for Mr Noel Simpson, who purchased him recently from the Oamaru studmaster, Mr John Johnston, when he won the United Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s September meeting on Saturday. Expensive. which was unplaced in the Grey Lynn Handicap earlier in the day, returned a win dividend of £7O 2s 6d and a place dividend of £l5 3s 6d.

Expensive, which was capably handled by O. Nicholas, who was recently appointed private trainer to Mr Simpson, led all the way in the United Handicap to win in 4min 25 2-ssec, after starting from a 4min 38sec mark. When challenged in the straight by Gay Warrior, Expensive fought on gamely to win by a length? This was Gay Warrior’s third successive second in two mile races.

Victory Dale finished on well to win the Takanini Handicap by a length from Tutta Bella, which was half a head in front of Indian Game with Parawa Derbv, which ran a fine race, a neck back fourth. Then came Fb-ing Smith, which weakened after leading to the home turn. General Manager, Paper Man. Likely, and Doctor Ted. The New Zealand Trotting Cup candidates. Single Direct and Sprayman, found their handicaps beyond them. A consistent pacer from J. M. Bain’s Oamaru team. Victory Dale, which gained two wins and six minor placings in his 10 starts last season, is an aged gelding by Sandydale from Ilana bv Capitalist from Logan’s Pet, by Logan Pointer from Stanley’s Child, by Stanley from a Highlander mare. Petite Yvonne tried to lead all the way in the Grey Lynn Handicap, but she was no match at the finish for the each way favourite, Yankiwi. which had trailed her for most of the race. Petty Officer gave his usual solid performance to finish third, and then came State Control. Desert Flight. Petite Raider, Grand Fleet, Glengarry, and Aqua Belle. After being one of the leading trio for most of the way. Aqua Belle failed to •ffntsh on as in her recent races. Yankiwi. which had won at his three previous starts, recorded 3min 21 2-ssec after starting from a 3min 27sec mark. Sent out favourite for the Franklin Stakes later in the afternoon, Yankiwi gave another splendid performance to finish second to Lady Joss in 3min 15 3-5 sec. • Lady Joss took the lead from the start, and after covering the first mile in 2min 15 2-ssec she snrinted the last half mile in Imin 2sec. Yankiwi, which gave Lady Joss 36 yards start, headed her crossing the top. but she decisively beat him at the finish, her margin being three lengths. Bred by Mr G. Lancaster, in whose interests he races, Yankiwi is by a New Zealand Trotting Cup winner in Josedale Grattan from Free Again, by Jack Potts from Free Advice, a splendid pacer with a record of 2min 41 l-ssec to her credit. By Blue Mountain King from the Logan Pointer mare, Intag’io, Free Advice is also the dam of Horsepower, Wrack’s Advice, Bingen’s Advice, My Lady Luck, and Pacing Power. A Thrilling Finish There was a thrilling finish in the Royal Oak Handicap, the little fancied Loyal Lass, which had set the pace from the start, staying on to win by half a length from the favourite. Signal Light, which made his task too hard when he broke with five furlongs to go. Sandyetta, which disappointed by her display in the Introductory Handicap earlier in the day, finished a head behind Signal Light, with Cyone Man, which lost much ground in the early stages, next. By Gaillard In a photo-finish for all places, Worthy Gaillard, which broke in the ’.last few strides, won the Improvers’ Handicap by a neck from Southpaw. Greek Brigade, which set the pace from the start, was half a head behind Southpaw, with Our Smith, which was cramped for room in the straight, practically in line fourth. Then came Margaret Gaillard, which was always handy. Gizera, Airswept. Attraction, Gailworthy, and Margaret Logan. Margaret Logan, which is trained at East Evreton by J. G. Hampton, was sent out third favourite, but she did not race up to expectations. A six-year-old grey gelding. Worthy Gaillard is by Gaillard from Joyce Worthy, which is by Frank Worthy from a Gold Bell mare. Began Unsteadily Trotting solidly after an unsteady beginning, Worthv Triumph won the Introductory Handicap by a length from Direct Earl, which finished fast to take second place from Doubtful. Walter Jingle, after losing ground at a critical stage of the race, finished close up fourth. The win favourite. Willonyx, broke badly in the early stages, and he was last for most of the way. Laurel Lawn alsq broke shortly after the start.
