MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MONDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) INTERFERED WITH CAR Raymond Hanna Lavender, aged 35, a labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge that on September 16 he unlawfully interfered with a motor-car, the property of Norman Scott Matthews. Senior-Seregant J. J. Kearns said that at 9.35 p.m. on Saturday. Sergeant Clark saw the accused sitting in a car in Hereford street - and trying to start it. The sergeant became suspicious and spoke to Lavender, who said he owned the car. Inquiries showed that Lavender did not own the car and, when the sergeant went to arrest him, he got out the opposite side of the car and ran away. Constable Brown chased him and found him in a theatre. Lavender was discharged from prison only on Saturday morning. Lavender was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.

FINED FOR DRUNKENNESS James Allen O’Malley, aged 48, a labourer, was fined £1 on a charge of drunkenness, having been once previously convicted of a similar offence within the last six months.

THEFT OF TIMBER John Robert Hamilton, aged 28, a waterside worker (Mr P. H. T. Alpers), who had previously pleaded guilty to a charge, that on August 26, he stole two lengths of timber, valued at 255, the property of persons unknown; and who had been found guilty on a charge of stealing four lengths of timber, valued at £2 3s 4d. the property of Arthur Frederick William Jones, was fined £5 on each charge.

FINED FOR ASSAULT Ronald Maitland Lisle, aged 20, a labourer (Mr E. B. E. Taylor), pleaded guilty to a charge that on August 6 he assaulted Charles Ross Weavers. A second charge against Lisle of wilfully damaging a pair of spectacles, valued at £4, thereby committing mischief, was withdrawn on the application of . the police, it being stated that Lisle had given an undertaking to pay for the damage. Senior-Sergeant J. J. Kearns said that Lisle and others were in the Civic Cafe and were asked to leave. They were standing outside the door when Weavers, who was inside, opened the door to let a woman leave. Lisle reached round and hit Weavers, knocking off his spectacles and breaking them. Lisle was fined £2. REMANDED Benjamin John Sewell, aged 28, a mechanic (Mr W. F. Tracy) pleaded not guilty to a charge that on September 16 he was found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in Ferry road. He was remanded to September 25 and was allowed bail in his own recognisance of £25 and one surety of £25.

Frances Irene Bradley, aged 36, a packer (Mr B. G. Dingwall), was remanded to appear in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton on September 25 on a charge that, on August 26, at Pukuhia, she stole £335 in money, the property of Wong Shao. An application for bail was refused.
