TRAM FARES IN CHRISTCHURCH
“NO INTENTION OF INCREASE”
“The board has no intention of raising fares in the meantime. That has been stated by the board on several occasions,” said the chairman of the Christchurch Tramway Board (Mr J. E. Jones) at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Jones said that since the announcement that the board had authority to raise fares, he had been asked repeatedly what the board intended to do. “How long is ‘the meantime?’ ” asked Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon. “The board has sufficient to do to get the loan through,” said Mr Jones “If we had both things to answer for one would cause confusion with the other.” “You are in a very awkward position. seeing you promised to lower fares,’ said Mr H. A. C. North. Mr G. Manning said that in Sydney and in some parts of Britain there were great deficiencies with the tramways.
