NINETIETH BIRTHDAY

REV. P. H. PRITCHETT The Rev. P. H. Pritchett, of Darvel street, Riccarton, yesterday celebrated his ninetieth birthday. Mr Pritchett earned fame on the West Coast in his earlier days not only because of his pastoral work, but through his prowess as a cyclist. He gained the distinction many years ago of being the first person to ride a bicycle south of Ross. Mr Pritchett was born at Darlington. Durham. His father was a cousin of Dr. A. Barker, who arrived in New Zealand in one of the First Four Ships. Mr Pritchett was licensed as a ay reader by Bishop Lightfoot and worked as a home missioner at Leith, near Edinburgh. He came to New Zealand in 1885. In 1889. after pursuing his theological studies in Christchurch. he was the last deacon to be ordained by Eishop Harper. His fist appointment was as curate of Rangiora. and later he held charges on the West Coast, at Little River, Governor’s Bay, and Mount Somers. He held the cure at Mount Somers until 1918 when he retired for health reasons. He continued to do rel’eving work for the Church for many years.
