TRAIN DERAILMENT AT LYTTELTON
DISCUSSION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL
The recent derailment of carriages of the steamer-express train in the Lyttelton railway yard was referred to at the meeting of the Lyttelton Borcugh Council last night, when Cr. F. H. Heal said that many essential railwaymen lived out of Lyttelton. He said that only one platelayer lived in Lyttelton, and in the event of a major accident this might be serious. On the occasion of the derailment railwaymen had to be sent from Christchurch by taxis, and it was nearly midnight before repairs could be started. Neither the stationmaster nor the chief clerk lived in Lyttelton. Councillors expressed concern, and on the suggestion of the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs) the council decided to bring he matter to the attention of the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr T. H. McCombs).
