Mount Pleasant Community Centre. —A test pile has been completed and the final design for the building and foundations is being prepared by the works committee in collaboration with the Community Centre Committee’s architect. This was reported to a meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening. Scarborough Boat Harbour.—Fourteen bays of the Scarborough boat harbour will be repaired. The Boat Club will take over control of the harbour, rent free. The council will repair and be responsible for the life-saving boat shed and the slipway to the shed, and will supply £5O worth of timber. Sanivan in Suburb.— The original Sanivan with the Diesel engine has been transferred to St. Albans. The engine is much noisier than the two n w Sanivans now delivered and working in the central area and the T.inwood district. “It is for this reason that the old one was taken to the suburbs.” the works committee reported. Last of Horses.— With the purchase of two low-loading tip trucks for picking up channel sweepings and patching, horses will be eliminated from the central area by the engineer’s department. The new trucks will cost £lOl9 each. The council also decided to purchase a bucket loader, fitted with a screen, at a price of £1650. plus the remains of an old belt elevator, for which it has no use, from T. E. Elliott and Company. Sumner Town Hall.— As the money to erect the building is available in the Sumner Town Hal] reserve fund, the City Engineer has been authorised to call for tenders for the erection of a Ftoreroom adjacent to the hall for use of various local organisations. Each group has been allocated a cubicle on the plans. Cricket Pitches.— Sixty-three cricket gitches in city and suburban parks ave been allocated to various clubs by the reserves committee. M.E.D. Tenders.—Tenders for work authorised by the electricity committee are:—steel transformer kiosks. P. Graham and Sons (£ 1400); temporary sub-station. Hills road and Akaroa street, T. S. Young (£215); sub-station switchgear, S. Gordon Anderson (£2634 and £5370); transformers A. Reyrolle and Company (£5483)- watthour meters. A. R. Harris and Company (£10.600). Site for Shops.— After considering a petition, the town planning committee recommended that a permit be granted for shops to be erected on the Norfolk street frontage at the corner of May’s road. Originally, the permit was refused. Of the 86 houses in the area, the occupants of 47 were definitely in favour of the shops. The council adopted the recommendation. Fire Insurance in New Brighton.— Five miles of high pressure reticulation was still to be done in New Brighton, said Cr. W. P. Glue when replying to Cr. C. D. W. L. Sheppard, who had asked whether there was any prospect of getting the Fire Brigade to inspect water pressures at New Brighton. Cr. Sheppard said that when improvements were made to water supplies, pressures could be inspected and recommendations made to the fire underwriters. The people of New Brighton might be able to get a reduction in their fire insurance rating, he said.
