BOWDEN CUP MATCH in a match for the Bowden Memorial Hockey Cup at Hagley Park on Saturday between Sydenham, the leading team tn the Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior competition, and Technical, the leading Wellington team, both teams gave clever exhibitions of stick play and combination. Sydenham had better ball control, however, to win by 3 goals to 1. The trophy was given in memory of N. Bowden and G. Bowden, brothers who were prominent In Canterbury hockey a few years ago. Sydenham has played the leading Wellington team every year since the trophy was presented, and has always held the cup. The following were the teams on Saturday :

Technical.—M. Emley, V. Nunn, R. Manning, K. Hall, H. Gee, V. Thomson, R. Percival, A. Meachen, L. Wilson, H. Sim, G. Eeles.

Sydenham.—H. Rhind, L. Smith, B. Hall, W. Morris, R. Peacock, R. Randle, I. Cummins. I. Smith. R. Calvert, K. Cumberpatch, N. Brownlie.

A clev.er run and a brilliant back pass by Brownlie that gave Sydenham a chance was the first feature of note in a fast, even game. The chance was missed, and Nunn sent the Technical ‘forwards away for Wilson to carry play into Sydenham’s end. The game flowed back gnd forth, with both sets of backs being tested. K. Cumberpatch, who was giving a sting to Sydenham's attacks, broke through at Technical's twenty-flvfe to carry on and beat Emley with a neat flick shot.

Sim, Eeles, and Wilson were combining well and shortly before half-time a brief melee in Canterbury’s goal ended in Eeles snapping up a rebound off Rhind’s pads to equal the scores. The half-time score was: Sydenham 1, Technical 1.

Technical opened the second half with a determined raid, led by Eeles, who gave Sims a chance which was spoilt by an infringement. Cummins and Cumoerpatch were associated in a promising move that brought Emley out to kick high and wide. Steady defence by L. Smith and Hall kept Sydenham’s goal clear, and Smith sent Brownlie away in a brilliant solo effort that brought roqnds of applause as he beat the defence and scored. Sydenham was definitely on top and Calvert started a clever move which Cumberpatch completed, beating Emley all the way. Sydenham pressed hard in the closing stages, but Emley put up a splendid defence and the game ended with the score: Sydenham 3, Technical 1. The umpires were Messrs D. C. Armstrong and N. Hocking. FOURTH B GRADE In a replay match in the fourth B grade, Woolston beat Sydenham by 5 goal* to 3. CANTERBURY COLTS BEAT MARLBOROUGH "The Press” Special Service BLENHEIM, Sept. 17. A goal in the last three minutes gave Canterbury Colts a win over Marlborough A in a representative hockey match played at Horton Park, Blenheim, on Saturday. The score was a fairly good indication of the run of play, in which Canterbury had a slight edge over their opponents. The game was ragged at times, and although the forwards went well neither side looked very impressive. There wai a certain amount of erratic hitting and on a number of occasions both sides lost opportunities through poor passing. Generally the game was fast and often exciting, particularly during the first spell, when both sides attacked solidly but were unable to penetrate each other’s defence until the last five minutes. During this period both goalkeepers played outstandingly, bringing off several remarkable saves. Blythe and Speedy, who came on as a replacement during the second half, were outstanding among the Canterbury forwards, and Newton, on the wing, showed good ball control and was quick to seize opportunities. Downe played well at right back. The teams were:— Canterbury.—Moreton, Downe, Patter-' son, Murray, Cummins, Sanford, Newton, Currie. Blythe, Hessey, and Duncan. Marlborough.—An dr ell, Miller, Bush, Hale, Bascand. Taylor. Kelly, Smith, N. Daines, G. Daines, O’Sullivan. Hessey, Speedy, and Newton scored for Canterbury, and G. Daines and Smith for Marlborough. The umpires were E. Nilsen, Marlborough, and A. L. Graham, Christchurch. In a curtain-raiser a Selwyn Club team scored three goals in the last five minutes to gain an 8-6 win over Marlborough B. WOMEN’S MATCH In the first matcfe for the McFarlape rose bowl, Rangiora High School beat Beckenham by 4 goals to 1.
