WAIMAIRI SANITARY SERVICE

Sir, —“Antiseptic,” complaining of lack of sanitary service, mentions amalgamation and speaks of a change of administration as the remedy. Those who look on the city as a panacea for all ills and an open sesame for all requirements should observe the significant facts. The latest is Cr. Tait’s inadvertence—“ Forty to 50 miles of street channelling require attention.” The better conditions seen by “Antiseptic” are the work of the Drainage Board. Outside the city area its work, and that of four county councils, is held up because of the amalgamation sword of Damocles hanging over their heads. The Islington-Hornby area requires not only miles of footpaths, channelling, and tar-sealing, but very urgently a drainage scheme and water reticulation. The Drainage Board has stated its readiness to provide these latter. What hope if it is abolished?—Yours, etc., W. R. eArly. Hornby, September 16, 1950.
