MUNITION DUMP EXPLOSION

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LOS NEGROS. Sept. 6. With a terrific blast an old ammunition dump exploded this afternoon near the Manus naval base.

The explosion threw debris and shell splinters hundreds of yards. One naval rating was injured when struck piece ’ of wood. Shell splmters tore through houses in naval quarters from which women and children had been evacuated a few minutes before. The concussion knocked pictures from the walls and buckled the sides of buildings. The explosion was caused by a fire believed to have been started by natives to clear bush.
