STATE PREMIERS IN AUSTRALIA

Stormy Meeting With Mr Menzies (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, Sept. 6. After a turbulent session in camera, the Commonwealth Government to-day flatly rejected a demand by the six State Premiers for an additional £25,000,000 in tax reimbursements to finance State services. Overruling the unanimous vote of the Premiers, the Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Menzies) «aid that the limit to which the Commonwealth was prepared to go was to give an extra £5,000,000. Mr Menzies’ decision was given after a stormy secret session during which the Premiers protested that State •services . would have to be

pegged at their present levels, or even reduced, in spite of pressure of natural population increase and huge immigration programmes. When the conference resumed in open session this afternoon the Premier of New South Wales (Mr J. McGirr) said that the Commonwealth Government was one of the most important contributors towards inflation.

He added that the Prime Minister’s offer meant that the State could not balance its budget. School and health services would be affected and the transport deficit could not be financed.
