ELOPEMENT IN CRETE

GREEK QUEEN ASKED TO INTERCEDE (Rec. 11 p.m.) ATHENS, September 6. Thirty leading citizens from the island of Crete arrived at Athens today to ask Queen Frederika of Greece to intervene in the island’s “Romeo and Juliet” runaway romance. Led by Bishop Evghenios, of Heraklion, where the abduction which began the story took place, they also plan to ask the head of the Greek Orthodox Church, Archbishop Spiridonos. to revoke his recognition of the lovers’ wedding because it has provoked an anti-church feeling in the island. Constantine Kefaloghiannis, the island “Romeo,” is now detained in prison facing charges of armed aggression and the abduction of his “Juliet,” Thassoula Petraghiorghis, the daughter of a rival family. Nobody knows where she is. She has left the Archbishop’s house where she was sent after being flown over from Crete with her husband after they left their mountain hideout, announced their wedding, and gave themselves UD.
