UNION PEACE CONFERENCE

PROPOSAL REJECTED IN AUSTRALIA

. MELBOURNE. September 6. The inter-State executive of the Australian Council of Trade Unions rejected a request by the Communistled Federal Council of the Australian Railways Union to call a trade union conference on world peace. It decided however, that a declaration should be made supporting world peace.

It is now considered certain that the executive will not modify the opposition declared at the May conference to the onus of proof clause in the Communist Party Dissolution Bill. The executive rejected an invitation to send delegates to the second World Peace Congress, to be held in London in October. However, it endorsed a protest to the Minister of Labour (Mr H. E. Holt) against the withdrawing of passports for delegates desiring to attend the congress, and decided to ask Mr Holt to allow into Australia the assistant secretary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (Mr B. Gebrt) who has been refused permission to enter the country.
