STATE HOUSING
MR SEMPLE’S CLAIM DENIED “NO CONTRACT HAS BEEN CANCELLED” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 6. “No contract has been cancelled anywhere in New Zealand for the erection of a State house.” said the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald), speaking in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives this evening. He was commenting on a statement last evening in the debate by Mr R. Semple (Opposition, Miramar) that instructions had been issued for the cessation of State housing. Mr Macdonald added that the Government's plan to erect temporary blocks of flats in the four main centres had been strongly criticised, but the speedy erection of them was an important factor and they would offer welcome accommodation for many people. Mr T. H. McCombs (Opposition, Lyttelton): The real objection is to the 25 years of life in those buildings. Mr Macdonald: 'Hie big thing is to get people into houses. We have to try the scheme to see how it will work. Mr R. McKeen (Opposition, Island Bay): That is no justification for erecting sub-standard houses. Mr Macdonald said he felt that prefabricated houses had not been given sufficient examination in the past. New Zealand should be able to manufacture prefabricated houses.
