SINGLES TENNIS TITLE IN U.S.

MCGREGOR BEATEN IN FIRST ROUND (Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 28. A sensation was caused at Forest Hills to-day by the defeat of the j oung Australian tennis star, Ken McGregor. in the first round of the United States men’s singles championships. He went down to Don McNeil, a former American Davis Cup player, McNeil, a bespectacled veteran 10 years older than McGregor, won in four sets; McGregor played without fparkle, and he showed fatigue as the result of his hard matches in the Davis Cup. There were 17 overseas players competing against 47 Americans for the title. All the other Australian players had good wins, as did leading Continental players. Results:—McNeil beat McGregor, 9- 3-6, 6-4, 6-1; Sedgman beat Harold Burrows. 3-6. 6-3. 7-5. 10-8; Drobny beat Arnold Beisser. 5-7. 9-7, 11-9, 6-2: Hopman beat Bernard Schreiber. 10- 1-6. 6-1, 7-5. 6-2: Mulloy beat Tonv Vincent, 6-4. 6-0. 6-1. Other first round winners included the Australians Mervyn Rose and George Worthington, the Canadian, Henri Rochon, the Swedes, Torsten Johansson and Sv6n Davidson, and a Filipino, Felicissimo Ampon.
