CYCLIST’S DEATH

INQUEST CONCLUDED John Thomas Radford, a retired ™^?V ei ? a ?K?£ ed 65 ’ died in T'hristchurch Public Hospital on May 12, the cause of death being laceration and hemorrhage into the brain and fracture of the skull. The injuries were sustained when Radford while riding a bicycle, was struck by a vehicle driven by John William Thomas, at the intersection of Grove road and Harman street about 3.15 p.m. the same day. was 1416 verdict of the Coroner (Mr Raymond Ferner) when the inquest into the death of Radford was concluded yesterday. John William Thomas, a manufacturer, said he was driving his car south along Grove road about 20 uules an hour. He was more than half-way across the intersection of Grove road and Harman street when a cyclist came from his right, and there was a collision. Claude Edward Steer, a motor mechanic, said he examined Thomas’s car. The king pins were badly worn and needed replacing. The brakes were in poor condition mechanically, and the tyres were smooth. Medical evidence was given by Drs. B. J. Frown and C. T. B. Pearson. Mr R. A. Young appeared for the relatives of Radford, and Mr W. R. Lascelles for Thomas. Inquests Adjourned The inquest into the death of Katherine Tovey, 77 years, a widow, was adjourned until the oathologist’s evidence was available. Mrs Tovey, according to evidence heard yesterday, died at the Christchurch Public Hospital at 11.30 a.m. on March 7. after she had been given a spinal injection. Sergeant L. P. Ricketts said the pathologist was ill at present. For the same reason the inquest into the death of Edwin Hatchell Hardy Porteous, aged. 46, a mailroom postal assistant, who died on May 8. was adiourned. Dr. C. L. E. L. Sheppard said that in his opinion death was caused bv a deep-seated strentococca] infection of unknown origin.
