NORTH ATLANTIC DEFENCES
DEPUTIES MEETING IN LONDON
(Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 22. The North Atlantic Treaty deputies at their meeting ih London to-day resumed work on plans to “accelerate the strengthening of the overall defences of the North Atlantic area,” an official communique said to-night. “Among the measures considered were steps to increase the effective military forces ahd the production of equipment, especially items of high priority, and the financial means for these purposes,” said the communique. “It is understood that the most important point raised at the meeting was the possibility of compensation for those countries whose balance of trade with the United States is edversely affected by turning over factories from the production of dollar exports to armaments production, in accordance with the requirements of the new overall defence programme. ‘‘The deputies also diseased the appointment of a permanent secretarygeneral for the North Atlantic organisation.
“They will Continue their meetings until early in September, adjourning ih time for the meetings of the Notth Atlantic Council in New York in midSeptember.*’
