The hogget section included a few pens of exceptionally high quality ewes and wethers, for which values were about two Shillings in advance erf last week. VEALERS The yarding of vealers was smaller thanj last week and was barely enough for re- 4 quirements. As a result last week’s drop in prices was fully recovered and the market was inclined to be firmer, though not quotably so. Prime large runners made to £l7 8s 6d, with an old sale at Up to £22 3s 6d, others £7 16s to £lO 13s 6d; best suckers £7 18s 6d to £lO 6s, medium £5 13s 6d to £7 16s; large calves 65s to 80s, medium 46s to 635, small and backward down to 30s. STORE CATTLE The store cattie yarding was of average size, and except for odd pens of graziers’ cattle was made up of oddments which were not very attractive. For any graziers’ cattle competition was very keen, with prices from par to a shade firmer. The quotable lines included: 10 four-year Shorthorn steers at £2l 18s 6d, 9 at £l6 Is, 6 two-year Aberdeen Angus heifers at £ll Is, 7 two-year Aberdeen Angus heifers at £lO 16s, 9 steer calves at £8 ts, and 7 heifer calves at £6 8s 6d. Odd cows in forward condition made up to £ll 3s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE There was an entry of 100 head in the dairy cattle section. Most of the cows and heifers were of inferior quality. Many of the cows would not be due for a month and for this type prices were a shade easier. The few good cows were selling at fully up to late rates. A good grade Friesian cow made £2l 10s. Most of the heifers were rather small and lacking quality, and did not meet a very good sale. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made to £2O, medium cows £lO to £l5, and aged and inferior £4 to £9. Helfers made up to £l7, medium £9 10s to £l4, and small and backward £4 to £9. FAT PIGS There was a full yarding in the porker section, but competition was much brighter and values recovered by four to five shillings a head on the decline of last week. Choppers were in heavier supply, but values showed little change. There was an entry of 18 baconers, but competition was slack with little change in values. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 7s 6d to £4 17s 6d. Medium uorkers, £5 4s 6d to £5 17s 6d. Heavy porkers, £6 Is 6d to £6 17s 6d. l Average price per lb, 12d to 14jd. 1 Choppers, £4 17s to £9 16s. Light baconers, £6 17s 6d to £7 4s 6d. Heavy baconers, £7 10s 6d to £8 7s fld. ; Average price per lb, HJd to 12Jd.

STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was about half the size of last Week. Good quality pigs met with a much stronger demand, and the easing of three to four shillings a head last week was fully recovered. Three sows were included in the entry, making from £lB to £2O. Values were:— Small weaners, 42s to 50s. Best weaners, 56s to 68s. Slips, 62s to 68s. Small stores, 70s to 735. Medium stores, 74s to 80s. Large stores, 85s to 91s. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, Aug. 23. An extra large yarding of fat cattle wds offered at the Burnside sale, the number being 470. Prices were mostly easier by 30s to £2 on last Week’s values. Extra prime bullocks made to £4O 7s 6d; prime, £29 12s 6d to £36 7s 6d: medium, £25 12s 6d to £27 2s 6d; and light from £22 7s 6d. Extra prime heifers realised to £27 7S 6d; prime, £l9 12s 6d to £25 12s 6d; medium, £l4 17s 6d to £l6 17s 6d; and light from £l3 7s 6d. Extra prime cows made to £2l 12s 6d; prims, £l6 7s 6d to £l9 7s 6d; medium, £ll 12s 6d to £l4 2s 6d; and light, from £lO 2s 6d. The yarding, of fat pigs was barely up to that of last week, with little alteration in prices. Best baconers made to £9 3s; prime, £8 to £8 15s; medium, £7 5s to £7 14s; and light from £6 18s. Best porkers sold from £6 6s to £6 17s; medium, from £5 14s to £5 18s. With a small entry of fat sheep to hand, competition for all classes opened at values well above last week’s, and gradually improved as the sale progressed. The quality, on the whole, was good to excellent. Hoggets, of which there was a short supply, also shared in the keen demand and made extreme values. Quotations:—Extra prime wethers, to 935; prime, 83s to 87s; medium, 76s to 78s: light, from 68s. Extra prime eWes, to 73s 6d; prime. 66s to 70s; medium, 57s to 60s; light, from 50s. Best quality hoggets, 65s to 775. Although the store cattle sale was followed by a good circle of buyers, bidding was slack and only better-class lines met with anything like a spirited sale. Because of the lateness of feed and the cold weather, buyers showed a tendency to hold back, and the same keenness was not shown as at former sales. Fresh-Con-ditioned three to four-year-old steers sold to £2O 7s; average sorts, £l6 17s to £18; mixed one and two-year-olds from £lO up. Best quality runners made up to £l7; good sorts, £9 5s to £l2. Best vealers made £5 10s to £6 15s; small and medium, from £4.

HIGH BEEF PRICES AT AUCKLAND (New Zealand Press Association)

mu i AUCKLAND, Aug.-23. The highest prices for at least 25 years were paid by butchers for beef at the Westfield saleyards to-day. To-day’s average was about 15 to 20 per cent, higher then last year’s peak price. No ox and heifer beef sold to-day under £4 per 1001 b, compared with a peak of £3 10s l fl St year. No b,!ast s °ld for less than £3O. The general shortage of beef cattle in the Auckland province is forcing the price up.
