Drivers Popular
All Methven residents feel a close association with their regular drivers, Noel Direen and Campbell McPhail, about whom many complimentary remarks were passed. There was particular reference to their unfailing courtesy and cheerful approach. These men are popular not only for their efficiency as drivers, but because of their willingness at all times to carry out various favours for local residents while they are in Christchurch. This is especially appreciated, often because the request is for something that does not justify a special trip to town. This is regarded by the drivers as just part .of their day’s activity. A recent request: “While in town please get me a birthday cake.” On another occasion the purchase of a baby’s singlet was requested. “For what size baby is it?” asked the girl in the shop. There the driver had to admit he did not know because the baby was not yet born.
Taking it all round, Methven residents seem well pleased with the improvement to the vital link to Christchurch which Midland provides. General opinion is that Midland is taking another progressive step in providing even greater travelling comfort by placing the Leyland Comets on the run. and Canterbury people on the Midland network can look forward to seeing similar buses placed on their service in the near future.
