CIVIC AFFAIRS
WOMEN URGED TO TAKE
MORE INTEREST
“The elections will be held in November. We hope that more women will take an interest in civic affairs. Your city is what you wish it to be ” said the president (Mrs G. H. Watts) in the report to the annual meeting of the Women's Branch of the Christchurch Citizens’ Association yesterday Members would be pleased to hear that the memorial seats had been completed at the top of the hills, and the planting of shrubs would be done in July, Mrs Watts said. The branch now proposed to proceed with the collection of money for the Pilot Light. To further that effort, the City Council had given the branch permission to sell photographs of the memorial on Christmas cards and postcards. The cost of the Pilot Light on top of the hill would be about £6OO, she said. A lot of work was required to put the light there. The branch was hoping people would be very generous.
Mrs E. Cameron Smith gave £5 towards the light. The branch thanked the Junior Chamber of Commerce for its offer to help build a memorial seat on the Christchurch side of the hills.
The Mayor of Christchurch (Sir Ernest Andrews) was congratulated on his knighthood.
