BIG RESERVOIR AT HUNTSBURY
“TOO FEW MEN ON JOB ”
EXCAVATION OF TWOTHIRDS COMPLETED
“Good progress has been made but there are too few men on the job. We want six good quarrymen there,” replied the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) yesterday when he was questioned on the building of the new reservoir for Christchurch on Huntsbury Hill. On the eastern hillside of Huntsbury avenue, above the children’s playground, a huge hole has been excavated in the rock. So far, only twothirds of the 40,000 cubic yards of rock have been removed. The original estimate was that the concrete work on the reservoir, to hold 8,000,000 gallons of water, would begin in the spring.
“Unless there is a remarkable change, I cannot see the excavation being completed by the end of the winter,” said Mr Somers.
